Marschner wurde in Zittau geboren und war zunächst für eine juristische Laufbahn bestimmt.
Nachdem er um 1815/16 Beethoven kennengelernt hatte, beschloss er, sich
der Musik zu widmen und wurde privater Musiklehrer in Bratislava.
Ab 1821 wirkte er als Komponist und Dirigent an den Städtischen Theatern von Dresden (ab
1821), Leipzig (ab 1827) und dem Hoftheater Hannover (ab
1830), wo die Oper Hans Heiling (1833) seinen Namen unter den führenden Deutschen begründete
Opernkomponisten der Zeit. Er starb in Hannover.
Von etwa 1830 bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts galt Marschner weithin als einer
der bedeutendsten Komponisten Europas. Er war ein Rivale von Weber und ein Freund von Beethoven und Mendelssohn. Seine
Opern enthalten oft thematisches Material, das auf einem Volkslied basiert, und dieses folkloristische Genre begann mit Webers Freischütz (1821).
Die letzte seiner Opern, Austin, wurde 1852 uraufgeführt.
Es wurde nicht gut aufgenommen und wurde später von dem
immer berühmter werdenden Wagner in den Schatten gestellt.
